Kathak is one of India’s eight major classical dance forms and has its roots in the storytelling traditions of North India. The word Kathak comes from Katha, meaning story, while Kathakars were traditional storytellers who used dance, music and expressions to narrate tales.
Over time, Kathak developed through diverse cultural influences. Its early connection with temples and devotional performances gradually expanded into royal courts, particularly during the era of the Nawabs of Awadh. This period also introduced Persian artistic influences, adding new dimensions to the dance.
Kathak beautifully reflects the interaction of Hindu and Muslim artistic traditions and shares a close relationship with Hindustani classical music.
